3 Unexpected Paint Projects That Work in Any Room
(StatePoint) Are you looking to spice up your space in the new year? Get some inspiration from those who’ve already taken the plunge.

The following design ideas were inspired by projects from FrogTape’s 2023 Paintover Challenge. The friendly competition required participating DIYers to complete a room makeover, including one featured paint project, using inspiration from the brand’s Design Trends. The participants completed their transformations with a limited budget, paint and painter’s tape – and you can, too.

Paint Appealing Patterns

Pretty patterns, such as gingham, checkerboard and stripes, offer an element of surprise and whimsy to a room. These designs can go on floor tiles, or anywhere in need of color, like walls and tables.

Achieve a modern and clean look with neutral hues or add dimension and movement by using varying paint finishes. Whichever scheme you choose, be sure to tape off the pattern with a quality painter’s tape, like FrogTape Delicate Surface, to keep lines sharp, even on freshly painted surfaces.

Defy Tradition with Bold Colors

While neutral tones like gray and beige will never go out of style, mixing colors can lead to that “wow” factor. The Bohemian Bazaar design trend dares DIYers to go bold with bright hues, like bright yellow or teal. Use dramatic colors to make a statement in any space like an office, bedroom, or even somewhere truly unexpected like the pantry.

Make them Marvel with a Mural

Whether it’s in a kid’s play area, bedroom or basement, creating a mural can add a personalized touch and make a wall pop. Don’t let the idea intimidate you. While a more seasoned DIYer may illustrate an image or even include words, murals can be as simple as stripes for beginners. No matter how basic or complex you decide to go, complete the look by carrying the color scheme or pattern throughout the area with furniture, décor and other accessories.

You might be surprised how much you can enhance your space with a great idea, a little bit of paint and a high-quality painter’s tape.

Build a home for the holidays: A gingerbread home that is
If you’ve ever made cut-out cookies, you can make a gingerbread house from scratch. Did your cottage from a kit collapse like a house of cards?

Homemade royal icing is easy to make and a better cookie caulk than the stuff that comes pre-packaged. And nothing smells better at Christmastime than gingerbread in the oven. While it is possible to make your house in one crazy day, I recommend giving yourself several days or evenings. Spend an hour or less each evening for a week and end up with a sturdy, adorable building that will make a great Christmas centerpiece.

The first December that I decided to make a gingerbread house, my husband, ever the optimist, wanted a replica of our home. He spent hours making a cardboard pattern of our 100-year-old, much-added-onto Craftsman. It had 16 pieces, many of them tiny and oddly shaped. We saved that for another year and instead made a building with four walls and two roof pieces. That’s what I recommend for a first project: A simple, four-walled cottage. You can still bling it up with plenty of candy doodads and frosting. Things you will need, besides the obvious measuring cups and spoons, spatula, etc.:

How Small Businesses Can Retain Customer Loyalty This Holiday Season

(StatePoint) Small business loyalty is on the rocks, according to a new study that finds that consumers are feeling more love for big retail brands this holiday season.

The study, from cloud-based accounting platform Xero, found that while 27% of consumers feel loyal to big retail brands, only 14% feel loyal to small businesses.

“For a small business owner who launched their business because of a passion, identifying ways to gain customer loyalty can be overwhelming. Fortunately, our data provides insights into tactics that small businesses can take to nurture ongoing relationships with customers,” says Ben Richmond, chartered accountant and U.S. country manager at Xero.

As the holiday season approaches, Xero is sharing these tips and survey insights to holiday-proof operations and keep customers satisfied:

• Keep delivery affordable: According to the Xero survey, 25% of survey respondents believe that delivery should always be free, regardless of original purchase price.

“Free delivery is an effective way to build customer loyalty, so offer it if you can. Just be sure to utilize cash flow forecasting or work with your accountant to gauge how much it will cost you long-term,” says Richmond.

If free shipping isn’t viable for your business, keep this fee low -- 30% said spending $21-$50 for delivery was agreeable. To bring down shipping costs, consider using shipping brokerages or building shipping into your pricing.

• Make delivery fast: At a point in the year when timing truly matters, it’s a good idea to offer express shipping. Thirty percent of consumers want their items faster, plus this allows you to charge for expedited shipping. On this front, customers appreciate communication. Encourage them to start seasonal shopping early and set their expectations with cut-off dates for when the last orders can be delivered in time for the holidays. You may also want to consider diversifying your supply and distribution channels by looking to both local manufacturers and service providers, and also large delivery partners, so you have options to fall back on if links in the chain are disrupted.

• Make shopping convenient: Match big retailer convenience by accepting multiple payment options, including e-wallets and by offering your products online. According to the survey, 50% of consumers are buying more online now post-pandemic, so it’s a good idea to meet them where they are.

• Build your reputation: Show your passion and small biz credentials in your branding and packaging. Don’t be shy about asking for reviews and referrals, as they’re key to building trust. And when you’re criticized online, always respond respectfully.

• Return-proof your products: Include detailed descriptions and pictures of your products to minimize returns. At the same time, consider offering more lenient policies for holiday-related returns. This both increases customer loyalty as well as extends the amount of time a return may impact your bottom line, as an extended period can allow for a slower trickle of negative growth.

• Use tech: Have a pulse-check on your cash flow by leaning into technology, like Xero’s cloud-based accounting platform, to automate tasks, manage inventory and track transactions in real-time. Technology investments can help ensure you’re constantly aware of how much return loss is acceptable per month as you plan inventory needs.

“With a game plan that combines strategic actions, responsive communication and adaptability, small businesses can compete with the big box stores, and win customer hearts and minds over the holidays,” says Richmond.

Her Hacks: The gift of hack
One of the hardest, most fraught parts of the holidays is that age-old tradition of gift giving.

Few things stress in quite the same way as nervously shuffling through a store on Dec. 23 looking for a present that’s not going to look like you bought it nervously on Dec. 23.

That’s why Her Hacks is here — to get you to Dec. 20, or with a little luck, Dec. 15.

Here are a few hacks to get you through every part of the gift-giving-gift-receiving process.

How to Prevent Bugs from Bugging You This Holiday Season
(StatePoint) Colder months have us spending more time indoors, with 8 out of 10 Americans hosting more gatherings inside their homes during the holiday season than any other time of year, according to research from Procter and Gamble’s Zevo. Unfortunately, insects have the same idea, as they head inside to forage for food and seek shelter from the low temperatures.

It’s no surprise then that in a OnePoll survey conducted on behalf of Zevo, 77% of Americans said they are concerned about spotting bugs in their home while hosting guests this holiday season, with 72% concerned about finding bugs amongst their holiday decorations.

“Those who want a bug-free home during the holidays will have to be proactive year-round. Ants, certain fly species, such as winter crane flies, and other insects, are adapted to cold temperatures and can be very active during these cooler months,” says Daniel Perry, Zevo entomologist at Procter & Gamble.

To prevent unwanted houseguests and banish bugs from your living spaces, check out these cold weather tips:

• Ventilate humid areas: As the weather gets colder, hot water is more in use in places like the bathroom or basement. These closed spaces can create humid environments where insects tend to gravitate. To attract fewer bugs, keep these areas well-ventilated.

• Prime your space for plants: If you have plants that you bring inside in the winter, properly prime and debug your home beforehand to prevent potential infestations, and check all your houseplants for unwanted insects before you bring them inside and every week afterwards.

• Tidy up: Cleanliness is the most common strategy for coping with bugxiety (fear of bugs) and there’s a good reason for it – it’s effective. Make sure you take out your garbage regularly, especially when visitors are creating extra waste. And while everyone loves a festive holiday spread, be sure not to leave food (perishables especially) out for excessive periods of time as that can attract insects.

• Get round-the-clock protection: Get the peace of mind

that comes with 24/7 protection against flying insects. Zevo Flying Insect Traps use blue and UV light to continuously attract and trap insects to an adhesive back that you never have to touch. Place the traps in the kitchen, garage and other areas where doors and windows are frequently opened, and keep them plugged in to protect your home day and night from pesky flying insects.

• Fight back: Nip signs of a bug problem in the bud by dealing with it immediately. Spot a bug? Zevo Insect Killer Sprays kill bugs you see, targeting and shutting down biological pathways found only in bugs, not people or pets, making them effective and safe when used as directed.

“While bugxiety is very real for the majority of Americans during the holiday season, fortunately there are many strategies for keeping them out of the home that won’t disrupt your family or guests,” says Perry.
